3 column fluid layout with min/max widths?

Sent by Jack Riddell on 11 May 2008 05:05

Hello all,
I am attempting to build a 3 column "Any order" layout. I'm finding plenty
of solutions that do most of what I need but the real issues come when I try
to combine them.

Here's my "must have" list...

1) The left and right columns are fixed widths - only the center column is
fluid
2) It must display as Center - Right - Left when the styles are disabled

That's easy enough right? The real catch here is..

3) It needs a min-width of 800px and a max-width of 1024

The solutions I'm seeing all call for percentage based widths which are
great if you want to fill the browser window. What I need is a way to
position the left column because I'm not sure how using a negative margin
would work when I'm using capped widths and not a "margin-left:-100%".

I realize it's a small jump in scale and I've been asked to make it "fluid"
but I'd welcome any other suggestions.

One approach that comes close is
http://www.fu2k.org/alex/css/onetruelayout/example/holygrail?order=312 but
as you can see, it doesn't resolve the min/max issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If the solution pops into my head @
4am I'll be sure to share it with you ;)

Thanks in advance!
....JR
