I've put up two versions with the new suggestions: the David Laakso "percentage width on the pink box" version: http://datagnostics.com/test/testbasic3.html and the Rob Swan version suggested by Georg: http://datagnostics.com/test/testbasic4.html I have to remove the border on the latter or else I get a 2-pixel horizontal scrollbar. I think that for my current purposes I'll use the Swan version, or else see if I really need it to be absolutely positioned after all. Thanks for your help, all.
