Holy Grail of CSS

Sent by Bill Brown on 31 March 2008 22:10

Hello All.

About two years ago, I was a member of this list. I then went away to
Africa to volunteer for a couple years. Now, I'm back and thought I'd
check in.

My big project in those days was that ever-so-elusive Holy Grail of CSS,
the three column, table-less layout. Many members of this list offered
loads of insight and feedback and it eventually grew into a sort of
Holier Grail (for me, at least). That is, a layout which was flexible
enough to support a variety of formats using identical XHTML source code.

My goals were:
  - No tables (sort of a given)
  - One, two, or three columns (any order)
  - Source ordered
  - Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.0
  - Easily themed (I use it for nearly every client and project)
  - Minimal CSS hacks
  - Real full-length column backgrounds (non-faux)
  - Cross Browser Compatible

I'm forgiving on the semantic issues, and so, some people will hate the
extra divs I used to achieve the desired results. I think too semantic
is just pedantic. In a pure semantic setup I suppose, any div or span
would be considered "extra" and disallowed as they serve no true
semantic purpose.

Before I go publishing the tutorial and making this available as a
download, I thought I'd check in with you folks to see what you think.

I'd love to hear your feedback and more specifically, which browsers
(and operating systems) are successful and which are buggy. I'm running
Ubuntu and have pretty much archived all my Windows computers, so I've
done very little testing on Internet Explorer.

There isn't really any content on the site at the moment nor have I
published all the themes...for now, I'm just curious about how
successfully the various formats will render on the myriad of browsers
out there.

Thanks so much for your time. I've been reading the messages posted
since I re-joined a couple of days ago; it's nice to see this list still
going strong with so many talented designers.

Best Regards,
Bill Brown
