Wow. This is a pretty serious analysis. I've decided that, based on previous experiences, the best thing when faced with a quirky CSS issue is usually to do as little as possible. Which is to say, for now, I'm going to just do nothing and not try to resize the text in form fields at all. But when the site is all dialed-in I very well may want to revisit this thread so I appreciate the answers.
