Thanks for your reply Barney. I have thought about the z-indexes as you describe them, that would require I add id attributes to all the li elements with z-index values in reverse order. Of course it would be best to avoid them, but it is a reasonable alternative. The reason I use B elements for the added html tag is actually Tantek Celik's idea (first implemented by Eric Meyer at Technorati), which Tantek describes here in the comments: http://justaddwater.dk/2007/02/15/rounded-corners-the-technorati-way/ Thanks for the update on Safari. Sounds good, but still does not solve my problem with the extra space showing up in IE when seting position:relative on li elements.
