Hi Ross,
you need to define the list as the float and then position:relative as per:
#cat_menu li {float:left;position:relative}
#cat_menu li a{
color:#ccc;
/*float:left;*/
position:relative;
padding:5px;
border-right:1px solid #fff;
background-color:#333;
font-size:10pt;
height:20px;
display:inline;
}
