Pelle,

Sounds like you are trying to emulate a table-based layout, which I
don't advise, but can be done:
http://mrclay.org/web_design/tabs/

What I *do* advise, is letting the content adjust to its content and
just centering the set of list items in their ul:
http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/horizontal15.htm
http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/horizontal31.htm
http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/horizontal19.htm

If you want to prevent the list items from wrapping to multiple rows and
generate a horizontal scrollbar instead, you'll probably need to set a
min-width on your layout in ems.
