I would think in my example there is no visible difference: gif as good
as the png. With my eyes (perhaps I need better ones ;-) ): even in
resolution 640x480 on my 17in monitor I don't remark any disturbing
difference in quality. [1]

[1] To avoid the grey background in IE, it is needed to add to the IE
hack that there must be no background image. Otherwise you get the img
two times: once as background-img (still with the grey) and the filtered
one on top of it. That is the same as without the filter!
[2] To make the transsparent gif, you need a reasonable paint program
and a bit experimenting - I used Paint Sho Pro.
