[css-d] Use of italic changing the width of a div (IE Specific)

Sent by C Alcock on 8 June 2002 12:12

Hello Everyone.

I have been working on a CSS based layout to redesign a very old site of
mine. I have encountered problems with the width of a div changing
depending on if the text contained in it is italic or not. This problem
only presents itself in IE 5/6, with Mozilla and Opera rendering the page
as expected. I have not ben able to test the problem on Mac browsers.

An example of the problem can be seen at:
http://www.aetech.co.uk/new2/ttutor/

with the CSS for the page being at:
http://www.aetech.co.uk/new2/style.css

Removing the font-style: italic; from the stylesheet for the blockquote
tag makes the content div line up as desired.

Does anyone know of a work arround for this problem, or is it just one of
the things we have to live with?

TIA,

Chris
