display: block;

Where block may be any of: block, inline, list-item, or none
The property is NOT inherited but it applies to all elements. Initial value 
is "block."

BTW, "Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide" (a.k.a. "the salmon 
book") is just what it says it is. Thanks Eric, it seldom leaves my desk.
