It doesn't: first-letter is a pseudo-element, not a pseudo-class, so when
you're selecting it you're selecting a different element than with 'a:link'
and co. (CSS3 recommends using '::' instead of ':' for pseudo-elements
like first-letter to make the difference clear.)

The reason why it isn't working for you is simply a bug in IE and Mozilla -
a:first-letter just doesn't work, even if the 'a' in question isn't a link.
It works in Opera.
