I think Dean Edwards found a way to do it for his IE7 script. 

I think you can get the result if you give the container
position:relative, then take the overflowing child out of normal flow
with position: absolute or float: [ left | right ].

IE6 does support display: inline-block, from what I remember, and this
is kind of like table-cell.
