What is doing this in IE Mac

I send the answer yesterday off list. I'll repeat it here now (for the 
sake of archives, etc).

IE Mac **requires** a width for the float property, per the CSS 2.0 Rec.

There is a workaround though: float both the <li> and the <a> inside of 
the li.
