[css-d] what does the future hold for css people

Sent by Dunstan Orchard on 25 April 2002 03:03

Hi there,

I know we're not allowed to ask for or offer jobs here, but I wondered
what your opinions were for the future of people paying attention to
CSS, XHTML, etc.

Every job I see at the moment (and I've looked at a _lot_ in my 5
redundant months) want: Java, ASP, VB, Flash. If you don't have these
they group you as a junior web designer and only offer you £16k (at
least those are the only other jobs I ever see advertised).

It seems that unless you have a shiny technology to your name you're
labled the same as those people who only learnt HTML last week. You
could be a css guru and it doesn't matter.

Do you think the demand for people like ourselves (ha, if I can group
myself in with you clever-bods) will rise any time soon? And if so,
when and in what areas will we become a wanted commodity?

The UK doesn't seem to care a damn about this area of web development.

I only ask because almost everyone on this list seems to be doing this
stuff for a living so I thought you may have some good insights. Maybe
you're all 'wanted commodities' now and it's just me :o)

thanks - dunstan

p.s. if this is not the sort of thing you discuss here do let me know.
