Firefox seems to get the picture, and with some gentle persuasion so will  
IE and Opera.
Someone else on the list may provide more specific help, but in the  
meantime you'll find some adaptable layouts with footers on the list wiki;  
and as well, answers regarding how to keep columns the same length: The
