Input field causes permanent vertical DIV growth in IE6... what gives?

Hi All

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

Regarding http://www.merges.net/test/

I have a simple problem: I want this menubar to be 22 px high, and to
appear that way, with the text input field vertically centred in as
many browsers as possible, particularly IE6 on Windows XP.

I've spent at least six hours on this, trying a variety of strange
combinations of positioning and tables and CSS and whatnot, with no
effective result.

What I've got now is the best I can get — in Safari and Firefox it
looks halfway decent but in IE6 on XP the whole containing DIV seems to
have been stretched down by a few pixels. I cannot get this space to go
away no matter what I do, except when I remove the input field from the
positioning equation entirely by using "absolute."

What gives? What can I do?

Thanks,
adam
