Conditional comments are one tool in the (now quite large) toolbox
of ways to work around problems in IE/Win. As with any workaround,
there are benefits and disadvantages to conditional comments, and
different people will have different perceptions of the pros and cons.
In my experience, the main benefits of conditional comments are
that they work exactly as expected in IE/Win, and are valid HTML.
The main drawback is that they have to be present in every page--
there's no way to put conditional comments into a style sheet.
That's not as much of a problem in a template-driven or other dynamic
site, but it's still something to be considered.
If you're having validation trouble with CSS hacks, then (for most
cases) there may be something wrong with your use of them. All of
the hacks I can recall are valid CSS, even if they do sometimes look
a bit weird to the eye.
At any rate, as long as we can keep the thread from becoming an
argument about the relative degrees of purity that different hacks
embody, and instead focus on practical pros and cons, I'd be very
happy.
