Thank you both for your quick responses. I took a quick look at the Meyer article on collapsing margins this morning. The behaviour still seems strange to me... I need to munch on it for awhile. I find you need a much greater understanding of structure and construction when working with CSS. In other words I'm still pushing myself out of table thinking. still munching...
