Based on the little code you provide, I can't reproduce the problem in
any Mac browser, but I don't have Mozilla 1.7 at hand, I have 1.8a6,
which might act differently. Try to provide some live page, it is much
easier to debug.
One possible suspicion: do you use the following in your style sheet:
* {margin:0; padding:0;}
?
This has been mentioned once as causing problem with that arrow in
select widgets, I think.
