I think I understand it. Bg.gif is placed in the centre of the body,
which has a different width than container. When the centre position is
calculated for branding.gif it is based on a fixed 600 px so will always
be in the same position. Bg.gif is based on the centre of body which can
be different and may result in a different result.
Put the branding div inside the body and it shoukld work because it will
be centred in relation to the body, which is the same as bg.gif.
