CSS-only image gallery-Possible?

Sent by xyz on 8 January 2005 20:08

Hi, I'm a photographer and taught myself (probably
very poorly) XHTML/CSS so I could build a website. I
code by hand, so I can understand everything.

I'm trying to use no Javascript, tables, etc., only
XHTML and CSS. I want to build a gallery section of my
site. What I want is a CSS only version of something
like this:
http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/images/showpic/finished_page.htm,
which is explained here:
http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/images/showpic/index.htm.

I want clicking (preferred) or hovering on a thumbnail
to load the full-size image into a spot on the same
page. I want to avoid pop-up windows, javascript, etc.
I also want to have both horizontal and vertical
images. Oh, and I don't want to download all the
full-size images at the beginning, I want to only
"download-on-demand".

Can it be done? Can anyone direct me to a site on the
web? If it can't be done with only CSS, what would the
next best way be? I've looked for things on the web,
and here's what I could find, but they don't do
everything I want:

http://moneytreesystems.com/css/picpopup.html
http://www.stunicholls.myby.co.uk/menu/scroll_gallery.html
http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/popups/demo2.html

Many thanks in advance.
Mike
