New to CSS

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the list and CSS layouts. I have been designing for years
using tables and I think it's time to start using CSS.

That being said, I have been to many of the popular sites and looked
at a lot of layouts. So, I think I'm ready to ask some relevant
questions here. Please be patient with me!

First, what I want to design is a simple three column layout with a
masthead. There are many examples that I looked at and that seem
relatively easy to implement. However, my concern is compatibility.

1) If I want to use a design that is the most cross-browser, what
would you recommend?

2) Some designs use float to position the divs and others use absolute
positioning or a mixture of both. How do these two techniques come
into play in terms of compatibility and what are the advantages of
each?

Thanks,

Frank Mamone
