how to vertical align text with top of adjacent image

Add float: left to #logo.  You can also apply margin-right to it if you 
want to create some space between its right edge and the left edge of 
the text.  I suggest you read up on floats (you're going to need them a 
lot):

Good for you!  It's always better to put text on the page as real text 
instead of resorting to putting it in images.
