Oddly, I'm using Omniweb 5.1b5, which use the same rendering engine as 
Safari 1.2, and I only see the duplicated content very briefly, when 
the browser repaints the page. And, as you said, having the whole page 
visible onscreen fixes the problem.

It reminds me a bit of this bug

In very old versions of Safari there was a similar painting bug with 
duplicated content. It was enough to resize the window to trigger it. 
But I can't find the reference to it anymore, and that bug was fixed 
since version 1.0.

I tried using different clearing techniques, but that didn't solve 
anything.

The bug doesn't happen if you use absolute positioning for your sidebar.
