PNG transparency alternative...?

No, it's the other way round: all parts of a PNG that aren't completely 
transparent will show, so in IE you get a solid shadow over the top.

It doesn't look so awful in this case.

The usual workarounds for PNG transparency in IE wouldn't quite work 
here, as tiled backgrounds and the IE AlphaImageLoader hack don't work 
together. Unless you made the background image so enormously high that 
it never had to tile on any page.
