Many (most?) shared-host environments won't have mod_gzip available,
but they will have php available which can do the same thing -- but
only for the php files.
I created a hack so that all text files are compressed by php; if
people are interested (email me offlist), I'll post something. Don't
respond to this thread -- it relates to external css files, but as a
discussion it's off topic IMO.
