Yeah, I've noticed that too. Basically, the Gecko browsers won't render
"invisible" stuff, so if you give it a property such as border which has a
visual element to it, the div appears OK even if it's otherwise empty. I
don't think it works with anything like background-color though, so I just
adopted the non-breaking space and small font size as my method because it's
not always practical to display a border.
I figure if the page is viewed without styles, a bit of extra space here and
there probably isn't going to matter much (and of course I test without
styles too, just to make sure).
But hey... now we have a choice of methods, which is never a bad thing! ;-D
