Rich,

Thank you very much; you're being very helpful. I've learned that others
are using lower resolution monitors, too, so I've made an adjustment that
seems to fix the problem. As soon as I resolve a couple of other issues I'll
put the whole site up again and learn what's still broken. :-)

   Changes so far:

   1) I added 15% margins to the left and right of the body element. That
moves it in on my monitor and it should (according to Schmitt's "CSS
Cookbook") make it fit all flavors of browser and monitor size/resolution.
I'm sure you and others will tell me if that's not correct.

   2) Adjusted width of pullquotes to a percentage rather than a fixed
measurement.

   3) Scaled the logo and other image so they're smaller and fit wtihin the
smaller width without overlap -- at least, here.

   4) Tweaked sizes and positions of the main content area and the footer.

I like the pattern but want to apply it to the cream-colored background I
have. Where can I get a copy of that pattern?

The one sticking point I've not been able to figure out myself is how to
have the footer (with the copyright, revision date and w3c icons)
automatically float within the left "column" but placed vertically even with
the bottom of the main content block in the right "column". That's what
varies from page to page and it is desireable to have the footer adjust to
that rather than being placed in one position on all pages.

What I did to try to solve this puzzle is create three containers within
the overall <body> or <html> container: #masthead, #middle and #footer. I
thought that the static flow would automatically place the #footer
immediately below the #middle, but it does not appear to work that way.
Hints, help or a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Rich
