Unless I missed it, no one has yet mentioned ­, the soft hyphen.
Unfortunately it is not well-supported either (a quick test shows that
it works in IE but not Firefox), but if it were, it would have the
necessary properties: invisible when not needed, forcing hyphenization
when it was. And to bring it back to CSS, it could be styled diplay:none
if you wanted a break without a hyphen.
