Well my first reactions would be to ditch the drop-downs. I rarely see a need for them and I personally find them difficult to use and annoying. Also, most use javascript (badly) making the drop downs unusable with JS turned off, a big accessibility no-no. As you are finding out, there are as many browser compatibility issues as there are drop down methods.
