a:hover not working properly in IE

webpage:

css here:

(The page passes validation at W3C for both html and css.)

I have an unordered list of links on the left side - the "Categories".
I'm using display: block on the links and in Firefox, if you mouse
over any part of each line, the hover works, even when you mouseover a
blank part of the line.

But in IE, the hover only works when you're mousing directly over the
text. I know that this can work in IE, I've done it on other sites -
but I can't figure out what I've done differently on this site that's
causing it to not work in IE....

(arrggghhh)

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says
something about human nature that the only form of life we have
created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own
image.
