Web Standards?

Sent by Michael Duff on 9 August 2004 23:11

All-

Hey I have two important question, none have to do with the actual
coding of css but more the other side, the business side and the design
side.

1) One of my fellow employees came up to me today and asked a very good
question "What should I, as a designer know about the limitations and
compatibility of using web standards to complete a website", now this is
an excellent question, which I could not fully answer, so I figured I
would post it to the masses and see if any one has any good books or
I-Net sites that explain from a designer ONLY aspect of what guidelines
to kind of fallow when designing for this.

2) I was then approached hours later by our marketing department to not
only explain to them how web standards but to give strong points on why
the company should adopt these standards but also push them to new and
old clients. my first thought was, "this should be easy" but then i ran
into allot of snags, like OLD browsers, ahhh! but again I am looking for
books and I-Net web addresses, I did point them to WASP, which has a
great article about web standards in the corporate world, but looking to
push on this.

This is a great opportunity not only for me to shine, but the whole
"movement", the company I work for deals with some big name companies,
which would be a great way to move things in the right direction. as of
right now I can only think of 2 major sites that use all css (that a
normal consumer/i-net user would visit) cingular and ESPN, but my
company is looking at some major redesigns with big name companies
(sorry cant name, you know how it is) that would definitely put it out
there to more people. hope this is enough info and hope to get some good
responses back.
