The "design" part of "web design"

Sent by Les Mizzell on 4 August 2004 03:03

I figured I'd never get really good at one thing trying to "do it all"
unless I specialized a bit. Just can't do Cold Fusion, ASP, JavaScript,
Graphics, Flash, Database design, blah, blah...and get really good at
all of it...

So, I decided to concentrate on the geek side of the web business and
find some graphic designers that didn't *want* to know anything geek at
all. It's worked out great - they feed me Photoshop files for layouts,
and then I do whatever I need to do to "make it work".

In the process, I've learned a heck of a lot about graphics, and am
comfortable in handling the graphic needs of my smaller clients myself.

I also keep a local Flash Guru on speed dial just in case. We ended up
building a couple of really cool data driven Flash sites together - one
uses a Flash interface to track "bug traps" in a building, and keeps up
with the complete "activity history" (bait used, bugs caught...) and
location of each trap as fed in by employees using hand-held scanners.
Neither of us could have done it alone.

Working with others that specialize in areas you're interested in can
teach you a lot...
