Links in navigation menu and main text

Sent by Frances Allen on 22 July 2004 03:03

Could some kind soul help a (rather desperate) CSS novice? I am
designing a website for a friend (who is still working on her text and
can't afford a professional web person), knocked something up in frames
and then decided that, no, I must do it properly, all in CSS. I am
using a traditional design, three components: top, left and center.

You can see what I am struggling over at
http://www.changetransition.com/TEST/eng/ . Look, for example, at
about.html. The relevant css file is
http://www.changetransition.com/TEST/styles/newcss.css .

The problem is the navigation menu on the left, which is currently
http://www.changetransition.com/TEST/Library/leftcontent.lbi. (I am
using library items , which are a pain, while I await a reply from her
isp about server side includes).

1. How to highlight the currently chosen option?
I have set it up as an unnumbered list and have managed to get it to
change when hovering or visited, but I cannot get it to show which is
the active item.

2. How to apply different colours to links in the center block?
The menu on the left is white text on a blue background; the main part
of the page is the reverse. I have tried to set up a style 'mainlink'
and apply it to links in her text but, as you can see from about.html,
I am currently in a mental cobble about how to actually do this!

3. How to have pulldown menus on the left?
I tried earlier, but failed miserably, to follow various helpful bits
of advice (on listamatic) for creating pulldown menus. I would like,
for example, to be able to click on the menu item 'About Us', and have
a submenu, consisting of the three names in the main block, pop up.
Needless to say, my knowledge of JS is even less than that of CSS and
the various internet hints have always assumed you knew where to put
the various bits of code they were kindly offering.

Final request: what are your recommendations for a useful CSS manual
(in English)? I live in the depths of the French countryside, have to
buy on the internet, and have bought one which has sold me the idea of
using CSS, but not equipped me to do so!

Thanks in anticipation

Frances

ps I have a Mac (OS 10.3) and check with IE 5.2, Netscape 7.01, Opera
7.5 and Safari 1.1. I haven't even started checking Windows, but any
additional code needed for IE Win, which I gather is a headache, would
be appreciated!
