I've written a javascript function that copies a table's column headings
into a row of absolutely-positioned divs that overlay the table's actual
heads, so that as the table scrolls (within a scrolling div) the column
heads stay put. The same technique could be used to "freeze" a copy of a
vertical column for horizontal scrolling. The script may need to be
tweaked to make it more cross-browser friendly. Let me know off-list if
you'd like to see it.
