Tom -
This happens every once in a while with my new clients. Ego plays a big
part the decision to keep this design. He/she is proud of their work.
And he/she, as a non-professional, might have every right to be proud
depending on when this site was created. You must get beyond that,
obviously.
The client must as themselves (or you ask for them) who is the site's
audience? Can the chosen audience use the site? Is it frustrating for
them? Your client can certainly use it (since he/she built the thing),
but there is no real data on how the user feels about it.
My suggestion is that you get six or seven people (owner's friends, your
friends, - people who are reasonably intelligent and fairly articulate
etc.) who have never used the site, and ask them to visit it. Put
together a check sheet of the things the owner is trying to accomplish,
the look he/she believes the site conveys, etc., and have the users
anonymously critique the site for all of these things (be sure to leave
lots of room for comments.)
That will bolster your argument that the site needs a rebuild. It might
even force the owner to look more critically him/herself. And make no
mistake about it, a facelift will not do. This site needs a complete
overhaul and a frank, brutal look at info architecture.
Good luck -
