Enclosing div perplexity

Sent by Bertha on 30 June 2004 20:08

This is probably a really basic thing, but it's got me stumped (and if
it's basic I should probably understand it!).

I was goofing around with CSS, and made a page with some text/headers and
then a couple of columns beneath. The columns are a couple of floated
<div> elements within the main <div>. The main <div> has a background
color, but it doesn't extend to the floated <div> elements:

<http://bertha.yetta.net/test.html>

So I put some borders around all the <div>s to see if I could find the
problem--and when there are borders, the background extends into the
enclosed float <div>s:

<http://bertha.yetta.net/test2.html>

Can some kind guru explain to a novice why this is happening? Obviously
it's not a vital production site or anything, but I'd like to understand
it better.  Thanks!
