According to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnaspp/html
/webdevinwhidbey.asp
The next version will validate to XHTML 1.0 strict. There is a third party
tool right now that will output XHTML from ASP.NET but I can't find my
bookmark for it. The third party tool was created to force ASP.NET to write
accessible code something it doesn't do a very good job at right now if you
use the defaults.

I have heard that the next version of .NET will have much better support for
Web standards. At least that's what someone has been saying on another list.

Welcome to reality:) If the client has not specifically asked that an
application conform to Web standards, then it will be out of scope and cost
your company extra hours and dollars. I work for a mid-level IT consultant,
and was faced with the same thing. Luckily, most of our clients are
public-sector and require WCAG 1.0 and Section 508 compliance, so I was able
to build a code library and a set of base style sheets that work well and
make everyone happy.
However, in other projects, I do not hesitate at all to use tables for
formatting. There is nothing wrong with it, and when you're client is more
focused on design, then it's just the best thing to do.
