You can try setting the width to something you know will cut off the 
text and then set the white space to nowrap. You may need to do some 
testing though, I'm not sure about browser support, but I belve it 
works in IE 5+ and NS 6.

width:20px;
white-space: nowrap;

alternatively you could set overflow to visible, (again YMMV):

width:20px;
overflow: visible;
