The float that I identified as trigger is your footer which fills up the
container, and indeed I saw that applying to it the fixes
(margin-right: -3px, ...) the problem disappear.

I may well be wrong (I didn't make enough testing), but it seems to me that
both problems (repeating characters, and AP box disappearing) are triggered
by "a float touching the opposite side of its container", this may be a
single float wide as the container, or more floats that together fill up the
container.
What is really strange, is that when I see the problem it is constantly
occurring, while you said that in your page it was intermittent.
