Ok, let's cut this or take it off-list.
This list is about CSS, and your thing is a nice CSS feature. Perfect.
From the CSS POV it makes sense, no extra markup involved, but it'll
lure people into using ALT as a mean to convey a caption
of an image rather than the replacement. Visually I won't need to see
"Picture of a mountain" as I see the mountain clearly. I would
use the alt atrtribute to state "mount helena, where me and my babe
played the blues on my guitar".
You as the creator are not to blame, but as soon as you allow an
invisible thing as ALT to be visible, people will use it for visual effects,
not to convey the meaning of the image to those who cannot see it.
