I remember a post on this site which mentioned recommended texts on
CSS.One, highly recommended, was on converting from table placement to
style sheets, going all the way through the process on an example ending
with the fully style-sheeted version. I have lost my notes on that, and
I don not know how to search the archives here. To save me reading a few
hundred messages, can someone give me the title?

The book sounds like like Eric Meyer on CSS chapter 1
http://www.ericmeyeroncss.com/projects/01/
"In this project, we take a page whose presentation is based entirely in
HTML tables and |font| elements, strip it down to the basic markup
needed to lay out the page, and then build the presentation back up
using CSS. The end result, while being almost totally indistinguishable
from the original file, is 35% smaller and much simpler, which can mean
faster layout times in browsers"
