I think you can add "margin: 0" to your body tag if it's the white
around the edges of the page you mean.
As for your lay-out, since you're already using a table in there, you
might want to do a skeleton frame outline with a table, and color with
CSS, especially as you are new to it. It might help keep your page
together in various browsers. Then you could always edit as time goes
on and you pick up all the quirks of a pure CSS page.
