:) It's probably a measure to stop people from "stealing" mark-up or some such. I'm not
impressed about that, given that I'm a nut about efficiency with bandwidth.

The white space is due to the use of a server side scripting language - in this case
possibly JRun {a Macromedia Application}
Scripting languages do create white space. They become invisible when the page renders but
they are there in the original code. You can write the code in a way to reduce the white
space by positioning it inline with standard mark-up but if you are working on a site that
requires regular maintenance, this can ultimately create a lot more work as trying to read
or debug non-formatted code can be a nightmare.
So, not really stupid...in fact, looking at the amount of work involved, I imagine the
developer to be very talented and aspire to their abilities...;)
