Macs and the CSS style: font-variant: small-caps;

Your friend is correct with respect to Safari, which does not 
recognize the font-variant small-caps.  This is a known bug in 
Safari.  However, IE5 and NN7 for Mac both handle this property just 
fine.  You can try to feed text-transform: uppercase; to just Safari, 
if you want to have it simply display all equal-sized uppercase 
letters.  That's as close as you will get in that browser without 
mucking up the markup.
