Dave, not all layout demos are that hard to grasp, 
or that needlessly complicated either. Try this:

Simon has it right, positioning requires a different mindset than 
tables do. I started with CSS positioning and am only now discovering 
how useful tables can be in certain situations. I don't see them as 
evil, but just another design tool. 

Okay, footers are a pain, but If M$ would only get off their
rear ends and support "fixed" positioning, CSS would suddenly 
get a whole lot more attractive. As it is we are forced to use 
a crippled subset of CSS. Also, 95% of the bugs and non-text
variations are in IE as well. Don't blame CSS, blame the real 
culprits.
