This has not yet been implemented other than in the ways you mention.
However, CSS3 has a working draft for a multi-column module that does
exactly that. You can read more here:

If you want to see a good example of doing this via script, see the
International Herald Tribune web site. Look up an article at
http://www.iht.com/ and you'll see it in action.
