I was planning on trying visibility: hidden but I see that it too is
hidden from many of the screen readers. Another option is to set
the text color to the same value as the background - I assume
that this would work but you could test it. Of course, it would
depend on the type of background. Another option might be to
use a 1x 1 transparent image with alt text (surrounded of course
with anchor tags).
