Images used in place of characters suffer from the problem of being in
fixed size in pixels. I hope it is clear that an attempt to solve this by
setting the font size in pixels would create far more problems than it
could solve.

Theoretically we could use CSS to scale such an image to the font size,
using e.g. height: 0.8em. The problem with this is that browsers do a
poor job in rescaling images. I've tested how the idea works, and it
doesn't work well even for a relatively simple character like the euro
