If I have feedback that is about the visual appearance (or other non-css
feedback), I tend to reply off-list.

I've occationally tweaked *copy* so that I liked the line breaks in my
max-width (set in ems) for the main content of my site. I've carefully
chosen a width for the paragraph containing our mission statement to break
where I want it to (I wish IE supported max-width, then I would be able to
do it without a horizontal scroll when the window is narrow).
I'm another one of the non-designers on this list. My my case, web design is
a hobby (I prefer architecture as a career choice because the 'design' is
more structure oriented, but with enough art to satisfy me). I volunteered
when my choir needed someone to maintain the website.
I think my site is usable and I've tweaked the typography a bit, but I'd
really like a new look for my site. I've been lobbying the board of
directors to come up with a logo, but so far I've gotten nothing. I'll
probably adopt a color scheme to match our new costumes (blue dresses for
the women). Eventually, I hope to get a little more creative with
navigation, but I need to fill out the content to navigate to first. Once I
do get a logo and color scheme, I'll think about more creative layouts and
be back here asking for advice.
